How Do I Choose a Mitzvah Photographer?

Choosing the right photographer for a mitzvah is a big decision, one that will impact the way you remember this special day for years to come.  A mitzvah celebration is a once-in-a-lifetime event, so you want to ensure that the photos capture every joyful moment, the big moments, and the small details that make your celebration unique.

If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options out there, don’t worry!  Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect mitzvah photographer to help make your celebration unforgettable.

1. Look at Their Portfolio

The first step in choosing a photographer is to check out their portfolio. A photographer’s portfolio gives you a clear idea of their style and skill set. Are their photos crisp and clear? Do they display emotion? Pay attention to the variety in their shots – from posed portraits to candid shots, details of the decor, and action shots during dancing or speeches.

Each photographer has a unique style, whether traditional, photojournalistic, or more creative. Choose a photographer whose style matches what you envision for your mitzvah.

2. Ask About Experience with Mitzvahs

While many photographers are experienced in weddings and events, not all have experience specifically with mitzvahs. Early on, I chose to specialize in mitzvahs as I prefer them to weddings. (I sometimes find myself mouthing “Ba-r’chu et Adonai ha-me-vo-rach!”) A mitzvah has its own traditions, rituals, and meaningful moments that require someone familiar with the celebration. Ask the photographer about their experience shooting mitzvahs and whether they’re comfortable with all the various aspects of the day – from the service to the party and everything in between.

3. Calm under pressure

You will also need a photographer who can quickly adapt to challenging shooting conditions. An extremely dark venue, an outdoor night-time reception, or a space with wood ceilings might overwhelm an inexperienced photographer. Ask if they’ve worked in a venue similar to your planned space. Also, your photographer must be able to handle nightmare scenarios. For example, one service I covered was set up in front of large windows with the sun setting into the room. I quickly set up two flashes to give us some beautiful images.  The crisis was averted.

4. Meet Them In Person (or Virtually!)

Before making any final decisions, it’s important to meet with your potential photographer.  Whether in person or virtually, this meeting will give you a sense of their personality and professionalism.  Luckily, I have a photography Youtube channel, so you can get a sense of the type of person I am (but please don’t binge watch).  A photographer who makes you feel comfortable is key – after all, they will be with you and your entire family throughout the day.

5. Is the price right?

How much? You may have a little sticker shock when you see some photographers’ prices. However, the right photographer brings expertise and experience and ensures your day runs smoothly. On top of that, the photography is often exceptional. (Thank you.)

Understanding lighting, composition, and timing is essential, as is understanding human behavior and how to get the most out of people. I pride myself on capturing “peak emotion,” that little twinkle in someone’s eye that makes them unique.

Take the time to review all the details and make sure the package you choose aligns with your needs and budget.

6. Read Reviews and Get Recommendations

One of the best ways to find a reliable mitzvah photographer is through recommendations. Ask friends, family members, or even your event planner if they know any photographers they would recommend. Personal referrals are often the best way to find someone with a proven track record of delivering high-quality work.

7. Check Their Availability and Timing

I always feel for those inquiries I get for the same year! I usually book two years in advance. I will never double-book a date as I am committed to one family each weekend. Also, make certain that THEY are the main shooter (I always am). Double-check that they are available for the full duration of your event, including pre-event photos, the ceremony, and the celebration. You don’t want to miss any important moments!

8. When will we receive our photographs?

How soon before you get the photographs?  How do you receive them?  How many photographs will you get after the event? Do you provide an online gallery?  How long will you have access to this gallery? What size are the digital files?  Do you get printing rights? How large can they be printed? Understanding the finished product is important so you are not caught off guard. I love delivering a huge chunk of images the morning after the event so my clients can post. Most events are completed within one week!

9 Trust Your Instincts

At the end of the day, trust your gut. If you feel a connection with the photographer and are confident they can deliver beautiful images, go with your instincts! You want to feel comfortable with the person documenting such an important milestone in your family’s life.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a mitzvah photographer is a personal decision, but by doing a little research and knowing what to look for, you’ll find someone who perfectly fits your needs. Remember, it’s not just about capturing beautiful photos – it’s about capturing the heart and soul of the day. With the right photographer by your side, your mitzvah memories will last a lifetime. Happy planning!
